Long before laboratories, pharmacies, or synthetic fragrance, there were plants. And within those plants, held in petals, bark, roots, and rind, were essential oils: concentrated aromatic compounds that have shaped human wellbeing for thousands of years.

For centuries, essential oils have been used in rituals of wellbeing, connecting us to the natural world and to ourselves. Today, they offer a gentle way to support everyday moments, whether that’s creating a peaceful evening routine, finding focus during the day, or simply pausing to breathe.

There’s something deeply comforting about scent. It has the power to shift how we feel in an instant, bringing a sense of calm, clarity or quiet energy into our day.

What Are Essential Oils?

Essential oils are highly concentrated plant extracts, carefully distilled from flowers, leaves, bark, roots and resins. Each oil carries the natural aroma and properties of the plant it comes from.

Lavender, for example, is often used to encourage relaxation, while citrus oils like bergamot or sweet orange can feel uplifting and bright. Earthy oils such as cedarwood or vetiver bring a sense of grounding and stillness.

The Benefits of Essential Oils

Using essential oils is less about quick fixes and more about creating small, meaningful rituals that support your wellbeing over time.

Some of the ways they can support you include:

  • Relaxation & sleep
Oils like lavender, vetiver and clary sage can help create a calming evening atmosphere.

  • Mood support
Citrus oils such as grapefruit, bergamot and lime are often used to uplift and refresh.

  • Focus & clarity
Rosemary, peppermint and eucalyptus can help clear the mind and improve concentration.

  • Grounding & balance
Oils like frankincense, sandalwood and patchouli can bring a sense of calm and emotional balance.

The beauty of essential oils is how personal they are. The same scent can evoke completely different feelings for different people.

The Art of Blending

Blending essential oils is where creativity meets intuition. It’s about combining different oils to create a scent that feels balanced, harmonious and meaningful.

A simple way to understand blending is through top, middle and base notes:

  • Top notes are light and fresh, often the first scent you notice (think citrus oils like lemon or bergamot). These notes evaporate very quickly but it is most likely the smell you associate with the blend. Think of them being the first impression, however they only last 5-15 minutes before evaporating.

  • Middle notes form the heart of the blend (florals like lavender, geranium or ylang ylang) After the Top Notes have evaporated, the Middle Notes will make their grand entrance. These notes are the body of the fragrance and will last 20 – 60 minutes.

  • Base notes are deep and grounding, helping the scent last longer (woods and resins like cedarwood, vetiver or frankincense) Once the top and middle notes have evaporated, the Bottom Notes emerge and last between 5 to 6 hours. This is the fragrance you will remember the most!

When these notes are combined thoughtfully, they create a rounded, layered aroma that unfolds over time.

Why Blending Matters

Blending isn’t just about scent, it can also enhance how oils work together. Certain combinations can feel more soothing, more uplifting, or more balancing than a single oil alone.

It also allows you to create something completely unique. A blend can capture a feeling, a memory, or even a moment in nature, like a walk through woodland, a coastal breeze, or a quiet spring morning.
